About Poor Calvin's

We are offering limited dine-in seating by reservation only! Established in November 2012, Poor Calvin’s is a unique oasis in Downtown Atlanta that offers a rare cuisine of Thai fusion with Southern influences. Chef Calvin Phan has brought his perspective of international culinary fusion to the front line of Poor Calvin’s. Chef Calvin Phan was exposed to the restaurant business at an early age, having come from a family who owned several restaurants, of all calibers, in Europe. Through this solid foundation, he immediately fell in love with culinary arts and decided to fulfill his life-long dream of working with food by attending culinary school in Germany.

We were packed in like sardines at a narrow table with a big group but the food outshined the atmosphere! Holy moly, what an incredible gem in Atlanta. I love a food fusion restaurant and Poor Calvin’s is just that β€” amazing flavors, wonderful menu, good drinks. I was impressed all around!

I've been coming to this place for years, and it has never let me down! My go-to order is the lobster fried rice, and if they have that green pound cake.. I've honestly never had a bad experience here. The hostess always greets you with a smile, and the wait staff is consistently friendly, attentive, and amazing. Great customer service goes a long way, and they always make you feel welcome. Yes, it's a little pricey these days (thank you, inflation 😩), but to me it's worth treating myself every now and then. Plus, the portions are huge, so I'm basically getting two meals out of itβ€”dinner tonight and lunch tomorrow. That's my kind of math! I'll definitely keep coming back. Great food, great service, and always a great experience

It’s not just a restaurant. It’s an experience! It’s obvious that the owner and chef took time curating AMAZING dishes that consumers will love and talk about. In addition, they take time to train the wait staff to be highly informed on each dish and drink. They serve only the best ingredients and present everything like a piece of art. Delicious AND beautiful! We met Griffin Collins III, who is absolutely FABULOUS, James who is a genius, and TJ, who served us, was incredibly sweet and attentive. Absolutely amazing service, food, and drinks!!!!

One of the best restaurant experiences we've ever had. Service was elite across the board. Drinks were great, food was amazing, since it was our first time we went with their staples of the Lobster Fried Rice and Crispy Beef, both were amazing. Went with the Buttermilk Frog Legs as an starter, which was lights out. Went with the Bananas Foster Pound Cake as a shared dessert which also was amazing. Our only regret was not coming here for dinner the 1st night we were in town πŸ˜“ Can't express enough how great everything was

I often get nervous when a place has so much hype. I find myself doubting the praise like it’s disingenuous bootlicking. HOWEVER. I am happy to report that Poor Calvin’s is absolutely worth the hype (and that nothing tasted of said boot!) This is a special occasion kind of dining experience. I’m not just saying that because of the price tag. I’m saying it because the menu is beautifully sparse - they don’t overwhelm you with ingredients and options that are too similar to each other. Calvin’s staff EXPERTLY walks you through their offerings with beautiful descriptions of palates and flare. Shout out to Linda, who was more culinary concierge than waiter!! We really enjoyed the pork belly eggs and the lobster Mac (which be warned LIT me up). But the real standouts were the wontons and the fried rice. The wontons are served with a trio of sauces that are so unexpected and perfectly harmonious! Red berry. Mango. Balsamic truffle. Like… WHAAAAAT?! Absolutely amazing. The fried rice was so decadent - chock full of seafood and veggies - and you know how most fried rice requires a healthy dash of soy or some sauce to moisten it up? NOT THIS ONE. I don’t know what voodoo Calvin is using
